I extracted sig from will.
To date, the only personal reference or anecdote I've seen or heard
regarding John is this, from the Civil
War letters written by Mitchel Thompson to his wife, Eliza.2
Three or more of John's sons served with Thompson.
If I were to prescribe what should be sent, I would say butter as first and
foremost, sorghum molasses, onions, pickles and the like. As for myself I am
perfectly satisfied to trust Uncle Sam for my living. If, however, you have
a surplus of white butter you might send a roll down to John Hogue's and he
will send it along within a keg he is going to send to Isaac and Alexander.
John and Ann (Simpson) Hogue had the following children:
| Elizabeth Catherine Hogue |
1824-1863 |
I received proof of this child in a March 2009
email from Linda Fratt. Elizabeth was born 20 Aug 1824 in Butler co
OH and died 26 Aug 1863, Peoria co IL. She married Robert McCullough
Finley 5 Sep 1845. Linda Pratt is descended from their son John Hogue
Finley (1847-) and his wife Julia Ada Smith.1

1. Linda Fratt provided the following evidence in her 2009 email to
me. 1) Portrait and Biographical Album of Peoria County: "Mr.
Finley was twice married. The maiden name of his first wife was Elizabeth
Hogue and she was born in Butler county, Ohio, a daughter of John Hogue." 2)
Obituary of Robert McCullough Finley states that the couple moved to Peoria
County, Illinois in the spring of 1847. 3) Death notice of Julia Ada Smith
Finley, Clarinda Herald 29 Feb 1928, mentions "Mr. and Mrs. Robert
Hogue, Miss Bertha Hogue, and Mrs. Frank Alexander, cousins of Tingley
Iowa." Linda states, "It finally struck me that she wasn't their cousin, her
husband John Hogue Finley was." 4) Tombstone of Elizabeth Catherine Hogue
Finley, Smithville Cem, Peoria County. 5) Census records, 1830 and 1840
(Butler co OH), "...confirm[s] a female child to be the correct age for
Elizabeth": 1830: Males 200101, Females 0100100001; 1840: Males 0120001,
Females 201001.
