The Pettit Correspondent, Vol. 1, No. 1, page 6 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ William and Beulah A Brief Sketch of Some Morgan County, Ohio Pettits The following is intended only to be an introduction to the Pettit families of Morgan County, Ohio. It is intentionally incomplete. All marriages, unless otherwise stated were performed in Morgan County and are recorded in the court house there. Most of the information about William and Beulah and their descendants was acquired from a 1961 Samuel Pettit genealogy compiled by A.D. May sent to me in 1985 by Marilyn Kromrey of San Jose, CA. _______________ William Pettit was born in PA, ca. 1756. The identity of his parents is still very much disputed. He married Beulah _____, ca. 1772 (NJ?) and died in Burlington Co., NJ in 1798. Beulah died there in 1825 having left a will. Their children are listed in William's ledger for the tavern he once owned. I understand this is now in the possession of a cousin of Ellie Nowels of Columbus, OH.: John; Mahlon; Benjamin; Joseph; Thomas, believed to have died at sea 27 February 1821 - source not noted; Simon, believed to have moved to Cuba - source not noted; Hannah Pangburd; Samuel. Only Samuel, Benjamin, Joseph, Mahlon and Hannah are mentioned in Beulah's will (1819). The 1830 census for Burlington Co. name, among other Pettits, Joseph, Mahlon and Benjamin. The supposed brothers, John and Samuel Pettit went to Zanesville, Ohio from Burlington County, NJ ca. 1810. John was born 1-1-1773 in NJ and married 1. Sarah Morris, 16 January 1800 (NJ?); 2. Elizabeth Riley, 1834. He died in Morgan Co. ca. 1860. CHILDREN: 1. Ann (1801-1893) m. Silas Saylor; 2. William (1802-1873) m. Laura J. Benjamin; 3. Allen (1804- ) probably m. Betsy Smith, Washington Co.; 4. Mary (1807- ) m. David Newman; 5. Job (1809- ) m. Mirriam Sergent; 6. John (1812- ); 7. Samuel (1814-?1837); 8. Beulah (1815-1852) m. Jesse Appleman; 9. Sarah (1818-1895) m. Daniel McNeely; 10. Susan (1821-1821); 11. David (1823- ) m. Sophia McCoy, Muskingum Co. In addition there is evidence to suggest a son named Thomas. He may the same that married Mary Ann Dugan, 1818, Muskingum Co. and the one that bought and sold so much land near John. Samuel was born 17 June 1786 in NJ and married Margaret Sniff in 1807 (Bordertown, NJ). He died in Morgan Co. 8-29-1823. His wife died in Muskingum Co., 12-29-1871. CHILDREN: 1. Eleazor (1808- 1814); 2. Elizabeth (1810-1890) m. Lewis Remsen; 3. Emanuel (1813-1904) m. Susannah Minshall; 4. Mahlon (1815-1886) m. Elizabeth Bankes; 5. John (1817-1887) m. Amanda Brewster; 6. William (1819-1809) m. Martha Pettet; 7. Samuel (1822-1892) m. Martha Blackstone. There were other Pettits in the area, most notably the family of Thomas Pettit of Mercer Co., PA (see Lovey Hearing and Plummer Pettit articles in this issue). Other Pettits probably associated with his family were Thomas B. (1795-1873), the shoemaker; Joseph Sr. (d. 1855); Thomas of Perry Co., OH (1807-1888); and Joseph (m. Elizabeth Moler). The above mentioned Martha Pettet, wife of William, was a daughter of Mrs. Nancy Riley whose 2nd husband, Hugh Riley had m. 2. Ann Pettit, widow of Plummer. Nancy Riley's first husband (Pettet) is unknown. Other unplaced Pettits are: William, m. Mary Booth, 1828, Muskingum Co. He is found on the 1850 census living near Thomas (1807-1888) in Perry County, OH (pg. 281). They were born about two years apart in PA.; Michael S. (1824-1910), born McConnelsville and likely a grandson of John and Sarah (Morris) Pettit. There is strong evidence to suggest the following may have been siblings: 1. Joseph (ca. 1828-1903) m. Catharine McGee, 1850, Muskingum Co.; 2. Alva, born 1834, died after 1910. He married Jane Haren, died Muskingum Co. 1923; Mary Ann (1825-1888) m. Thomas Suten.
