Francis and Joseph were sons of Joseph Pettit, Sr. (died 1855, Morgan County). Joseph, Jr. married Sarah Ann Morris in Morgan County, 11 June 1846. It appears that Joseph was in Louisiana by 1850. _______________ Sheriff of Morgan Co.) Recd for Record March 17th 1857 To.} Deed ) and Recorded April 22nd 1857 Francis Pettit ) To all to whom these presents shall come. Whereas at the June Term A.D. 1855 of the Court of Common Pleas of Morgan County Ohio Sarah Ann Pettit recovered a judgement in an action of Divorce against Joseph Pettit for the sum of One Thousand Dollars, as Alimony, and Thirty three dollars and Sixty six cents cost. And whereas the said Sarah Ann Pettit, on the 18th day of April A.D. 1856 caused an execution to be issued out of said court upon said judgement directed to the Sheriff of said County commanding him that he cause to be levied of the goods and chattels, and for want thereof, of the lands and tenements in his bailiwick of the said Joseph Pettit, the judgements and costs aforesaid. And whereas, the said Sheriff having received, and indorsed on said writ no goods, did on the 4th day of June A.D. 1856, levy by virtue of said execution, on the following described lands and tenements as the property of said Joseph Pettit. to wit. The undivided one third of One Hundred and twenty six Acres more or less of Range Thirteen of Town ship Nine, Section seven of the South west quarter. Subject to the widows dower, which said premises the said Sheriff caused to appraised according to the law, and forthwith deposited a copy of said appraisement in the Clerk's Office of said Court. A nd whereas, afterwards on the 10th day of July A.D. 1856, the said Sarah Ann Pettit caused another execution to be issued out of said court, upon said judgement directed to the Sheriff aforesaid, commanding him that the lands and tenements of said Joseph Pettit, so levied on as aforesaid, he [e**pose] to sale to satisfy said Judgement and costs and the said Sheriff having caused the time and place of the sale of said premises to be advertised for thirty days in the Morgan Herald, a newspaper published and of general circulation in said County did, by virtue of said last mentioned writ, at the time and place mentioned in said advertisement to wit on the 13th day of September A.D. 1856 at the Court House in McConnelsville in said County [e**pose] said premises at public sale, and Francis Pettit having then and there bid for said premises, Three Hundred and Sixty Dollars and he being the highest and best bidder, and that the sum being two thirds of the appraised value of said premises, the same were Struck off and sold by said Sheriff to the said Francis Pettit for the sum so by him bid as aforesaid. And Whereas the said Sheriff having made due return of said writ, and his said proceedings in the premises to said Court according to the command of said execution, and said Court at the October Term A.D. 1856 having examined the proceedings and sale aforesaid, and being satisfied of the legality of said sale and that the same was in all respects in conformity to the law ordered the said Sheriff to make to said Francis Pettit a deed for said premises. Now Therefore, I Isaac H. Roland Sheriff as aforesaid in pursuance of the sale and order aforesaid have bargained and sold and do hereby grant bargain sale release and convey to the said Francis Pettit his heirs and assigns forever the premises above described with their appurtenances, subject to the widows dower aforesaid, and all the right title and Estate of the said Joseph Pettit in and to the same. To have and to hold said premises with the appurtenances unto the said Francis Pettit his heirs and assigns forever in as full and ample and Estate as I the said Isaac H. Roland as said Sheriff can or ought to convey the same by virtue of the proceedings aforesaid. In testimony whereof I Isaac H.
