Plummer Pettit, a son of Thomas Pettit of Mercer Co., PA, was probably born in that region ca. 1790s. He enlisted into the U.S. Army sometime in the last days of the War of 1812 (Fall 1814). He married 1) Amanda Bixby or Boxby, 5-9-1816, in Trumbull Co., OH and is found still living there on the 1820 census being a resident of Ellsworth twp., now Mahoning Co., OH. (Ellsworth is approximately 10 miles west of the town Poland mentioned in the Lovey Hearing article beginning on page one - Ed.). Plummer and Amanda had two sons: + 2. John B. 3. Edwin, born ca. 1820. To Louisiana before 1851, having been a resident of New Orleans that year when selling his share of his inheritance to Thomas Nelson (Morgan County, OH Deed Book S, p. 563). He is possibly the same Edwin Pettit (age 29, b. OH) found living with George McComb and his wife on the 1850 census (Orleans Parish, LA - 3rd Rep. Dist. - p. 174). His occupation was listed as cabinetmaker. Plummer married 2) Ann Pettit, 3-29-1825, in Muskingum Co., OH. He died in Morgan Co., OH in 1830. His widow married Hugh Riley in 1834. Proof of Plummer's five sons is found in the following Morgan Co., OH court records: Guardianships, 5-7- 1844 (see Gateway to the West, Vol. 5, #4, "Morgan County Guardianships, 1843-1847"); Deed Book Vol. D, page 433; Deed Book Vol. E, pages 434-436; Deed Book Vol. S, page 563. Children by Plummer's second wife: + 4. Jonathan. + 5. Eli. + 6. Ellis. 2. John B. Pettit, eldest son of Plummer and Amanda, was born ca. 1818 in Ohio, He married Nancy H. Deaver, 3-16-1843, in Morgan Co., OH. She died there, 1-17-1863, and is buried in the Church of Christ Cemetery, York twp. John's date and place of death is unknown. John and Nancy had two sons: 7. William E., born ca. 1844, OH. + 8. Columbus Hiram. 4. Jonathan Pettit was born ca. 1826 in Ohio and was married to Nancy Blackston, 11-9-1847, in Morgan Co. By 1860 the family was residing in Putnam Co., MO. By 1870 Jonathan is found living with his brother Eli in Vinton Co., OH and returned to Putnam Co. by 1880. Alice, 1/2 yr. 6. Ellis Pettit, born ca. 1829, OH. Youngest son of Plummer and Ann. Married Sarah J. Denton, 3-26-1857, in Vinton Co., OH. Date and place of death unknown. To Vinton Co. (from Morgan Co., OH) by 1857; Putnam Co., MO by 1870; Newton Co., IN by 1880. Seven children by 1880 census (Vol. 25, E. D. 131, sheet 1, line 4): 24. Martha E., born ca. 1859, OH. 25. Columbus Hiram Pettit was born in Deerfield twp., Morgan Co., OH on 4-23-1847 and died in Trimble, Athens Co., OH, 6- 8- 1929. He was the second son of John and Nancy (Deaver) Pettit. On 3-10-1872, in Athens Co., he married Louisa Bryson, a daughter of Morris and Emily (Edwards) Bryson. She was born in Ohio, February 1848. Columbus moved to Union Co., IA in 1864; Mahaska Co., IA the following year; Trimble, OH in 1872. A wagon maker, he and his wife were members of the Disciple Church. He is buried in the Maplewood Cemetery. (History of Hocking Valley, Ohio.....Chicago, 1883). They had three sons: 31. Harlen E., born ca. 1873, OH. +32. Barton H. 33. John Garfield. 14. John W. Pettit was born in Ohio on 12-3-1854. He died in Nelson twp., Moultrie Co., IL, 12-8-1887. His wife, Malissa A., was born 2-2-1852 and died in Moultrie Co. on 7- 11-1904. Alameda, born April 1882, IL. +38. Harry C. 39. Lailley, born September 1887, IL. 32. Barton H. Pettit, born ca. 1877, OH. He married Bessie A. Duncan on 6-30-1909 in Athens Co., OH and died there 11- 29- 1959. He is buried in the Maplewood Cemetery in Glouster. Patricia Ann, born 7-5-1929, Athens Co., OH. She married Charles Johnson, 11-26-1846. 36. Albert J. Pettit was born 3-10-1880, to John and Malissa Pettit, in East Nelson twp., Moultrie Co., IL. Pettit, brother of Albert (#36), was born 12-4-1844 near Allentown, Moultrie Co., IL and died in Jacksonville, of the same county, 12-26-1956. He married Anne Chaney, a daughter of John and Luvicia Chaney. She was born in Illinois, 1-27-1891, and died in Moultrie Co. on 7-20-1961. They are both buried in the French Cemetery.
