OBITUARY: MRS. ELIZABETH MILLER
Elizabeth, daughter of John and Elizabeth Southern, was born in Giles
county, Virginia, March 23, 1820. She moved with her parents to Tipton,
Iowa, in 1840. In January, 1841, she was married to Floyd Duncan, and the
same year they moved to Duncan township, Mercer county, Illinois. To them
were born three children, Elizabeth E. Pullen, John B. and Jasper. It was
but a few years till a dark cloud of sorrow spread over this pioneer home,
and the beloved husband and father was called to rest. August 20, 1840 (?
1848), she was married to Michael Miller. To them were born Charles
Madison, Theodore C., Mercer Pulaski, Emma Jane, Walter A., Terrecie
(Theresa) and Stephen. Of her children, two preceded her to the other
shore, Charles, who departed this life in 1865 and Emma in 1886. Two,
Pulaski and Walter, reside in Nebraska, the others being residents of Mercer
county. Of five brothers and eight sisters, three brothers survive her, the
eldest living near the old homestead in Virginia, the youngest in the State
of Washington, and Charles Southern, who lives near Viola, Mercer County,
Illinois. For many years, she had been a faithful follower of the beloved
Master, working in her quiet, earnest way, always attentive to the
appropriate service, always ready to minister to any who might need help or
sympathy. But the kindly voice is silent, and the soothing hand is still.
She has gone to the reward of the faithful, to meet those who have gone
before, to welcome those who follow in the footsteps of the Blessed Master.
Elizabeth Miller departed this life September 13, 1896, aged 76 years, 5
months, and 21 days. Funeral services were held from the L.D.S. church,
Sept. 14, at 2 p.m., and interment was made in the Millersburg Cemetery."
